RELIGIOUS ART | NEWS OF WEEK
THE ALPHA OMEGA ARTS
By TAHLIB
In Helen Zughaib's gouache painting 'Generations Lost,' thousands of Islamic women wearing patterned hajibs are holding photographs of lost loved ones. The painting by this 2009 winner of the A&O Prize was on view this week when President Obama declared war on the religious extremist group known as ISIL. In doing so, he also rejected the militant's choice of the word "Islamic" in their name saying it: “is not ‘Islamic,’ [as] no religion condones the killing of innocents, and the vast majority of ISIL’s victims have been Muslim.” In honor of the Islamic "innocents," Helen Zughaib's "Generations Lost" (above) is my NEWS OF WEEK.
