By the beginning of this year, the artist
Nina Chanel Abney’s studio, a 1,500-square-foot space in a multiuse building in Jersey City, N.J., that she’s rented since 2018, had begun to feel like a storage room. Abney, 38, is known for large-scale paintings with densely layered compositions and fragmented narratives that touch on topics including politics, race, policing, sexuality and celebrity.
