Icon Writing Revives an Ancient Tradition

THE STAR PHOENIX
By Darlene Polachic

CANADA---Rev. Paul Matheson was on a trip to Greece and the Middle East when he was introduced to icons, religious art pieces that are as old as Christianity itself and found mainly in Catholic and Orthodox traditions. Matheson found himself drawn to the simplistic beauty of the icons and purchased a mass-produced piece being sold in a marketplace. He brought it home and placed it on his desk. Some years ago, he heard about an icon workshop being offered by Gisele Bauche at Queen's House. He signed up and began learning the art of iconography. What makes this unusual is the fact that Matheson is a Baptist minister, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Saskatoon. [link]
