CANADA--Ever wonder why you eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday? Now think about it, if you are going to fast for 40 days most of us have two problems; we have too much food that will tempt us in the cupboard and we just have this psychological need to celebrate before we have to mourn. Shrove Tuesday, sometimes called Pancake Tuesday, sometimes called Mardis Gras or Fat Tuesday' is when we use up all the sugar, all the flour, all the butter in the house. It was a time of celebration so that the 40 days will go by easier. Of course, first you went to confession. That is where the word "Shrove" comes from: it is the past tense of the verb "Shrive" which means to get pardon for one's sins. [link]
