INDIA -- The state on Friday stayed the drive of the BMC against illegal shrines and crosses in the city. The decision came after widespread anger and protests over the action by the corporation, empowered by a court order. Over 50 shrines and crosses were razed recently from footpaths, roads and public land. Officials said the stay will be applicable till March 18, as the state will get time to frame policy guidelines. "We were told by higher-ups on Friday morning not to demolish any more shrines in our areas," a local ward officer said. [link]
