UNITED KINGDOM - The Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington, London has been home to a vast collection of Islamic art for more than 150 years. Today, the Museum has taken a step beyond simply showcasing it, they have joined efforts with the Abdulatif Jameel Group’s Community Initiative to highlight and encourage work inspired by the faith. The Jameel Prize is a biennial award recognizing the use of Islamic design and art technique in contemporary work. Inaugurated in 2009, it is now in its second run. The main mission of the Jameel Prize is to create a platform for artists and designers and emphasize Islamic art’s significance, showing that it does indeed still produce bold contemporary work. The Jameel Prize 2011 Shortlist exhibition will remain on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum till Sept. 25, 2011. [link]
