Mormon Church Lashes Back For Portrayal Of Prophets And Profits

The controversial magazine cover
(RNS) The Mormon church is lashing back at a business magazine that parodied their prophet's mission and portrayed the church as lucratively rich but miserly with charitable donations. Reaction to the magazine's cover has overshadowed the article, however. The illustration satirizes the moment when Mormons believe John the Baptist bestowed the priesthood on Joseph Smith, the faith's founding prophet. In the parody, John the Baptist tells Smith, "and thou shalt build a shopping mall, own stock in Burger King, and open a Polynesian theme park in Hawaii that shall be largely exempt from the frustrations of tax ..." Smith answers, "Hallelujah." [link]

What's most interesting about this is the low-key response. If the Roman Catholic Church had been attacked, the Catholic League would have mobilized congressional Republicans to have Hearings. If Jews had been attacked, the Anti-Defamation League would be all over this, and of course had the Quran or the Prophet Muhammed been parodied, well we know what would have happened. What's the reason for the Mormon Church's low-key though direct response? Mitt Romney?
I sorely wish Romney was not running against Obama, it just feeds into a stereotype that they are a racially bigoted church, led by wealthy male ploygamists who want to don't want any people, even gay mormons to have equality. I don't want this seed to grow but each day of political race...it grows and grows.
