Artist of the Week: Art is a Matter of Faith For David Jacquez

NEW MEXICO---David Jacquez' art is colorful and moving with spiritual themes. An entire room is devoted to crosses, most made by Jacquez, who also creates colorful, moving and imaginative multimedia works with spiritual themes. Some are a sort of hybrid of retablos (painted religious scenes and portraits) and bultos, which traditionally depict carved wooden images of saints and religious figures. What his creations have in common are inspiration from his deep faith, and his medium of choice: vintage wood recycled from church properties throughout New Mexico. Each piece comes with a handwritten statement by Jacquez, explaining the Biblical inspiration for the work and usually, something about the origins of the wood he used to create it.
