RELIGIOUS ART | NEWS OF WEEK
ALPHA OMEGA ARTS
By Gregory & Ernest Disney-Britton
Tears cover the background as collages of crystals, a backdrop for a lone figure searching for safety in a world hostile to black, queer bodies. Devan Shimoyama is a shamanistic figure searching and teaching with a composition inspired by the canon of Caravaggio. His interest in spirituality is also reflected in his fascination with science fiction authors like Octavia Butler. This week, we read reports on his exhibits in both Miami and Pittsburgh. That makes "Devan Shimoyama: Cry, Baby" at The Andy Warhol Museum, our art of the week.
