"Virgin..." back on display
Leonardo da Vinci’s "Virgin of the Rocks" will goe back on display at London's National Gallery on July 14th, after an 18-month restoration project. The work was commissioned in 1483 by the Milanese Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception, and was intended to form part of their oratory altarpiece but took 25 years before installation in the chapel. During the waiting period, Leonardo painted two other versions: the first (now in the Louvre); and this replacement. (Read: Press Release)
