Art Review | Black Jesus Appearance in Ohio

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
By Amy Davis
"Jesus of the People" by Janet McKenzie
OHIO - A young, berobed black man wears a crown of thorns like a badge of street culture. His face is strong but sweet and sympathetic. His posture is confident. The painting, Jesus of the People, won a 1999 National Catholic Reporter competition to find "Jesus for the New Millennium" - judged by art historian and BBC host Sister Wendy Beckett. A reproduction of the painting, along with other works by artist Janet McKenzie, is on view through Aug. 12 in the Martin de Porres Center. [link]
