Brooklyn Museum Salutes Catholic Artist, David Wojnarowicz for "Fire in My Belly"

NEW YORK - The Brooklyn Museum will include the video Fire in my Belly (above) by artist, David Wojnarowicz (1952-1992) beginning this Friday as part of the Hide/Seek touring exhibition. Wojnarowicz. a Roman Catholic born in New Jersey made the work five years before he died of AIDS, and said he chose to put Jesus in his piece because “I wanted to make a symbol that would show that he would take on the suffering of the vast amounts of addiction that I saw on the streets,” and because “I saw very little treatment available for people who had [AIDS]” (Source: Daily Beast). This touring exhibition, which originated at the Smithsonian last year caused a firestorm of controversey when political extremists forced the censorship of the film.
