The Nativity of Jesus has been a major subject of Christian art since the 4th century. Christian art includes a great many representations of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. In the liturgical calendar, the Nativity on Christmas Day is followed by the Circumcision of Christ on January 1, which is not actually mentioned in the Gospels, but is assumed to have taken place according to Jewish law and custom, and the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple (or "Candlemas"), celebrated on February 2, and described by Luke.
