Recognizing the Saints, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art

INDIANA - The Indianapolis Museum of Art invites the public for a free, docent-led tour of Catholic Saints this Sunday, April 22 at 2:30. During the 60-minute tour, guest will learn about the many saints who are depicted in the works of religious art and how the use of symbols in the works can reveal who they are. Guests will also learn about the artists of the time, including Agnolo Gaddi (above) a member of an influential family of Florence artists from the mid-1320s until the end of the century.

The best part of this tour was the artwork--exquisite choices from the collection. The second best part was the knowledge and passion of the docent guide, John Johnston. He was shakey on a few details but he more than made up for it in his desire to share all he knew with enthusiasm, and when he wasn't sure he said so directly but also offered his best educated guess which I appreciated. The worst part of the tour was that it had to end, even though he let it go longer because he knew we were so hungry for the experience. The second worst part though was that I was 50% of the audience. I expected at minimum to share the experience with 10-12 people but there were just two of us (both enthusiastic, and I shared my card) but it was another sign for me that the audience for religious art in Indianapolis is a tough audience to "excavate" but I'll keep trying, just as surely as the museum will keep collecting, and John Johnson will keep giving enthusiastic tours.
