NEW YORK -- The hand-forged, irregular brickwork at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church offered a glimpse into the practices of 12th century Lombard artisans. The monk-painted murals inside the former St. Francis Xavier, now the Buffalo Religious Arts Center, which blend Catholic and United States history and culture. (Where else can you see the Virgin Mary depicted with the U.S. Capitol building?) All these sights and more greeted viewers who toured landmark area churches Saturday as part of a “Sacred Sites Open House Weekend” that was a collaboration of the New York Landmarks Conservancy and local worship sites. It was a maximalist experience for two minimalists who love to collect. We sold off multiple collections, including snow globes, Mary sculptures, paperweights, Disney plates, nutcrackers, 21c penguins, walking canes, and 100 prints and paintings! Most of it was in storage, but plenty was on display. We did it by inviting our community of artists and collectors to an estate sale before opening it to the public. Bates for The New York Times The Minneapolis Institute of Art announced Thursday that it had decided not to move forward with a planned Kehinde Wiley exhibition, citing recent allegations of sexual misconduct against the artist, which he has denied.
