The bulk of the 200-object array, however, dates from 1700 to 1947, when India achieved independence from British rule and the maharajas were stripped of their political power. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts:  "Maharaja: The Splendor of India's Great Kings," 200 N. Boulevard, May 21 through Aug. 19. (804) 340-1400, vmfa.museum.
