Rev. Sinead O’Connor in ‘Gospel Sessions’ at Lincoln Center

NEW YORK---It’s not unusual for a mid- or late-career white pop singer to declare an interest in African-American gospel music, especially from the 1950s, considered its late golden age. But the picture feels different when the pop singer is, say, a 46-year-old Irish female priest — ordained in 1999 by an independent Catholic group not recognized by the church — with serious interests in Rastafari and Hinduism and serious problems with organized religion. Sinead O’Connor wore a priest’s collar, camouflage pants and bare feet in her first major experiment in this music, her “Gospel Sessions” concerts on Friday and Saturday night at Alice Tully Hall, part of the Lincoln Center Festival. She dedicated it, with precision, to “the over 155 female Catholic priests in this country.” [link]
