MICHIGAN---A hip-hop Mardi Gras parade in Detroit, in-home folk music concerts, an ice cream truck playing classical music and a permanent light installation on Woodward Avenue will soon become realities in local community arts, thanks to $2.1 million in grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Fifty-six community arts projects will see $2.1 million in funding during the initial round of the three-year, $9 million Knight Arts Challenge Detroit. The Miami-based foundation was expected to announce the grants Sunday, with the full list of winners posted at knightarts.org. The challenge is part of a $19.25 million investment in Detroit arts announced last fall, along with $10.25 million in operating grants to cultural institutions in the region. [link]
