"Christ and the Young Child" by Carl Heinrich Bloch
During Thursday's visit to a local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I learned that the Eucharist, Holy Communion, and the Lord's Supper is referred to by Mormons as the sacrament. It's the same ritual practiced by other Christians except that they drink "water" instead of red wine or grape juice. It's an apt extension to the religious art that fills the hallway walls. In January 1849, Danish painter Carl Heinrich Bloch's parents allowed him to pursue a career creating Art and today copies of his religious works fill Mormon church hallways around the world. Running through May 10 at Brigham Young University Museum of Art is "Sacred Gifts" featuring the work of Carl Bloch, Heinrich Hofmann and Frans Schwartz.
