RELIGIOUS ART | NEWS OF WEEK
ALPHA OMEGA ARTS
By Gregory & Ernest Disney-Britton
We like that Sarah Lucas uses found objects and confronts social norms, but we'd hate living with it. One critic wrote that it "teeters between high seriousness and total inanity." In Christ You Know It Ain’t Easy, Lucas fashioned a Crucifixion statue from Marlboro cigarettes. She also traveled to the Philippines to film a friend as he was actually nailed to a wooden cross. A thirty-year retrospective: ‘Sarah Lucas: Au Naturel,’ is now at the New Museum, New York until January. That makes Christ You Know It Ain’t Easy by Sarah Lucas, our art of the week.
