INDIANA - What happens when someone you know dies? Beyond Dead: A Youth Response at the Indiana Interchurch Center Gallery is an opportunity to experience the feelings of high school artists in central Indiana, and the experience is powerful. The exhibit is broken into three parts, Part 1: A&O Prize Art Contest featuring 15 works by students from eight local high schools. The works include charcoal and pencil drawings, shrines, photography, painting and video. There are three judges for the contest, Rita Organ, former executive director of the Indiana African American History Museum; photographic artist William Rasdell; and the third vote is cast by audience (vote online by Friday).

Part 2: includes three group installations, one from Park Tudor School which uses a Popsicle to examine death, a second is a family project of 9-11 quilts, and the third comes from the Latino/a Youth Collective honoring immigrants who have died on their way to the United States. The Park Tudor group also created a video which documents their journey in creating the installation. You will want to view this short and exciting 5-minute video.

The final area, Part 3: is a small grouping of works by local adult-artists also exploring the theme of life & death. The adult artists include Debbie Jamison, Tony Melendez, Pastor Charles Tripp as well Ryan Petrow who currently has two other works on view at both the Johnson County Museum and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

All three portions are powerfully presented, and images of the complete installation have begun being posted online (and will continue to be posted) including the videos at Alpha Omega Arts. The exhibition is a featured event in this year's Spirit & Place Festival, and brought to the nation by the A&O Prize for Contemporary Religious Art, Indiana Interchurch Center and the Center for Interfaith Cooperation.

Lastly, while the exhibit, Beyond Dead: A Youth Response does runs through December 31, there are only two more days to vote for the A&O Artist awards which will be presented this Saturday, November 12 at 2 p.m. to coincide with the closing of the Spirit & Place Festival. If you want to cast your vote for a talented young artist, you must visit either the Indiana Interchurch Center, 1100 W. 42nd Street or vote online at Facebook.com/AlphaOmegaArts by Friday at 5 p.m.
