RELIGIOUS ART | NEWS OF WEEK
ALPHA OMEGA ARTS
By TAHLIB
At the last minute, we took off for Chicago for an escape that led to the sacred space installation: "13th Ballad" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Created by Theaster Gates, urban planner and sculptor, it is an investigation of art objects and derelict places of Chicago that serve as markers for religious, racial, and social transformations. In the atrium, facing an altar and a massive double crucifix, are rows of pews removed from a now closed church. The crucifix is suspended from the ceiling and filled with objects left-behind such as dishes, small gift boxes, and even umbrellas. The experience resurrected my own memories, lost or intentionally forgotten, making this my NEWS OF WEEK.
