Good Morning Travelers! Yes Tahlib, that did help quite a bit.  It also made me realize I am still in the process of trying to get pregnant (oh boy, that could be taken a couple of ways...LOL) but I think you know what I mean. As of late, I've not been attending services.  I pretty much use the beach as my 'spiritual time'.  There is a church I would love to try, it's called the Sunshine Cathedral , but I've yet to.  There always seems to be something going on, whether it be crew practice or the once-a-week opportunity to lay in bed past 5 am.  I know, no excuse, but I really wish the service was later as the church is about a 25-30 minute drive for me.   I've emailed a couple places of worship close to where I live, but they don't accept the LGBT community and therefore I don't accept them.  I know that's bad too, but after gayagenda all week long, I also need a break, and if I went into a church that started in, I would probably spea...

Billed as the World’s Greatest Self-Taught Art Show and Sale, Folk Fest will celebrate 17 years in Atlanta with a three-day show slated for Aug. 20-22 at the North Atlanta Trade Center. PHILANTHROPY - The trustees of a New York Catholic church this week rejected the proposed sale of a vacant convent building to a nonprofit Islamic organization for use as a mosque, The New York Times writes.

ARTDAILY UNITED KINDGOM - David Mach , famed for his dynamic large scale collages, sculptures and bold installations, today launches his major new project to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible in 2011 with the installation of a massive coathanger crucifixion figure, suspended from steel supports, outside St Giles Church in Edinburgh . This is the first of four coat hanger crucifixion figures, including a contemporary sculptural version of Calvary, which will be displayed in the exhibition at Edinburgh’s City Art Centre in the summer of 2011. ALPHA OMEGA ARTS By Ernest  Disney-Britton GEORGIA---Atlanta's St. John's Lutheran Church , organized in 1869, is the oldest Lutheran church in the city. The sanctuary, added on in 1969, is a contemporary octagonal shape representing the "eighth day of creation" (our new creation through our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus), was considered very contemporary in 1969" (How clever is that?). I met the recently  reinstated  "Gay" pastor, Brad Schmeling at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in 2008 as part of a community forum of gay discrimination in the church. We’ll be there tomorrow.

When Jesus revealed to his family that he was different and that he had a special mission in life, they did not understand. When his parents found Jesus in the Temple, they were surprised and said exactly what a lot of parents say to gay children when they come out: "How could you do this to us! We have been looking for you sorrowing (lit. "in great pain")." Jesus did not apologize to his parents for "coming out" and acting on who he really was. He simply said that he had to be his true self and left it at that.  While we must keep the 4th Commandment , "Honor thy Mother & thy Father," we do not have a similar obligation for other family members distinct from our community as a whole. A college graduates controversial final project has Israel's religious community up in arms (as usual). The student, Yossi Even-Kama is graduating from Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. According to Y-NetNews.com , his work, "State of Judea", which has been posted on Facebook and picked up by various religious websites, is a fictional depiction of the gradual death of Israeli democracy in the years 2020-2023 and the establishment of a religious, anti-democratic state in its place." In Cincinnati, OH and in cities across the nation, older churches closed this weekend. They are congregations  struggling in aging, decaying churches. In Raleigh, NC , chunks of the ceiling fall during services and members are rushed to safety. It's a problem in older cities every where. "A lot of these churches have shrunk from 500 members to 100 members, or from 800 members to 200 members," said Robert Jaeger, executive director of the Partnership for Sacred Places . "They look at the trend lines and they see the decline in membership and wonder, 'Gosh', in 10 or 15 years are we going to be gone?"

It is easy to see why the clergy and parishners at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, England are excited about their new state-of-the-art exhibit. Launched on July 14, 2010, "Oculus: An Eye into St Paul’s" is a 270° film experience where visitors can experience 1400 years of London's history through the eyes of that church, and the other buildings which formerly occupied the same site (Read story in ArtDaily )

The conservative legal defense group, Pacific Justice Institute has demanded that art in an exhibit in a California library be removed. The mixed-media art is titled "Moral Values" and is part of a 63-piece exhibit that opened in the Sacramento County Public Law Library last month. The News Observer quotes: "The purpose of the message is to directly attack and demean the foundation of the Christian faith," said Brad Dacus, president of the group. "If this had been another faith, there would be outrage." Following on the heals of last week's court decision in Russia, where the two curators were convicted of religious hate-speech, the exhibition is bound to generate lots of attention. A hand-colored iconic lithograph, the  Madonna (1895) by Edvard Munch ; depicted by the artist's mistress, was sold at auction for nearly $2 million (£1,252,000), nearly twice the lower estimate. It is the largest amount ever paid at auction for one the Norwegian impressionist's lithographs and according to Art Daily, it is the second most expensive print in the world. Leonardo da Vinci’s " Virgin of the Rocks " will goe back on display at London's National Gallery on July 14th, after an 18-month restoration project. The work was commissioned in 1483 by the Milanese Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception, and was intended to form part of their oratory altarpiece but took 25 years before installation in the chapel. During the waiting period, Leonardo painted two other versions: the first (now in the Louvre); and this replacement. (Read:  Press Release )

As posted last week , a decision has been made in Russia's case pitting the Russian Orthodox Church against two museum curators, and the church won. The judge affirmed the church assertion that the works exhibited in the controversial exhibit, "Forbidden Art" incited religious hatred. ( Read Today's Story )

By Pastor Miner He begans with story of the prodigal son and his celebrated return by his father. St. Paul says we all have evil habits but in our relationship with God, we can change. What does it take? Is it that easy? No. There is gap between our aspirations and our actions. Today's lesson is from The Book of Romans. Romans 6, 7 and 8 reveals St. Pauls delimena of the "Gap" saying "I do not do what I want, but I do the very things I hate..." (v. 7:15,18). Why do we struggle if we've accepted the gift of Christ? The answer is that just because we have a gift, doesn't mean we know how to use it. A gift does us no good if we don't use it. How do we activate that gift? In Roman 8:5, "....those who live according to the Spirit, set their minds on the things of the Spirit." If I want to live happily, I have to make up my mind--focusing my energy on positve things of God. Ghandi said, "Watch your thoughts ... for it becomes your destiny....

THE NEW YORK TIMES By Douglas Martin UTAH -- Arnold Friberg , a widely popular artist of historical and religious scenes whose painstaking quest for stunning realism led him to Valley Forge, Pa., on a winter’s day to paint what became a famous portrait of George Washington praying in the snow, died Thursday in Salt Lake City. He was 96. His series of paintings of events in the Book of Mormon , the sacred text of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has been reproduced millions of times. A high point for Mr. Friberg was his being selected by the legendary director Cecil B. DeMille to create 15 historical paintings to serve as models for scenes, props and costumes for the movie spectacle “The Ten Commandments.”   [ link ]

HIGH   - One of Dalí's most famous images,"Christ of St. John of the Cross"(1951) portrays the crucified Christ on the cross from a striking angle, looking down from above. Dalí described the image as having come to him in a dream, in which he envisioned Christ as the atomic nucleus. Two curators of a museum exhibit, Forbidden Art 2006 that mixed religious icons with sexual and pop-culture images face up to three years in prison in a case that is testing the tolerance of Russia's government and its dominant church, and has the artistic community up in arms. SUN-NEWS - The New Mexico State University Art Gallery presents "Connecting with the Divine: Devotional Art of New Mexico," an exhibition of Mexican and New Mexican religious art from the Mary and J. The hexagonal shape is symbolic of the Star of David. The Communion Table consists of 13 wooden tables--one for each apostle and a large one for Christ. The Oculus shines moon light right down onto the altar and is a reminder that, "We are Christian, but we are not the only Christians." Having never been to a DoC service, I felt service had a very Catholic feel to the liturgy including the weekly sacrament of the eucharist (communion) but unlike the Roman Catholic Church, Tolerance.org says that DoC are a "liberal Protestant Christian denomin...

Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue is back in all its glory after a $4 million renovation. Restoration on the 125-foot-tall monument began in April to fix small cracks and fungal damage and remove spray-painted graffiti. The 79-year-old statue, which stands atop the 2,300-foot-high Corcovado mountain overlooking Rio's white-sand beaches, was covered in scaffolding while some 100 workers undertook the restoration.

ORLANDO SENTINEL - Many people may not know, but the Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine (8300 Vineland Avenue, 407-239-6600) has an art gallery where religious art by national and international artists is presented. One such artist is our own Edson Campos , who is well known for his highly rendered figurative paintings. Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. he will be onhand for the unveiling of his tribute to Leonardo da Vinci 's "Last Supper" (June 26-August 22). Campos' interiors are grand and atmospheric, and his very realistically rendered figures possess an ethereal grace.
