INDIANA---As you enter the Disciple Center in downtown Indy, the first thing that greets you is the 6' 11" bronze sculpture, "Victory of Faith" by Wisconsin artist Suzanne Derzon. Next to the sculpture is her artist statement: "This sculpture is about faith, the strongest bond that binds us in that special relationship with God. It is my hope that every viewer would attach their own meaning to the piece and find satisfaction in its existence." This is the world headquarters for the 700,000 member Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Headquartered in Indianapolis since the 1800's, the Disciples moved into the current building at 130 E. Washington St. in 1995 marking the first time all the local offices have been consolidated into one building. The collection which begins on the first floor, includes the Disciples Center Banner, The Ark, Stained Glass Window and a 2,500 piece wooden Communion Table by John Alber; but many other works and symbols are sprinkled throughout the floors including a dramatic collection of third-world works in the Division of Overseas Ministries. My excellent tour was given by Suzie McKay in Communication Ministries.
