RHODE ISLAND - “Reframing Haiti: Art, History and Performativity” is a vibrant celebration of Haitian art and culture organized by Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. One of the highlights of the exhibit — a selection of the sequin-studded “flags” created for Haiti’s voodoo temples — is housed in one of the weekday-only buildings (the Bass Performing Arts Space). Nevertheless, the display is worth seeking out. If one art form can be said to capture the unique blend of earthy exuberance and deep spirituality that permeates Haitian life it’s here, in these colorful works created for voodoo religious ceremonies.
