BELIEVER FOR ARTISTS: Rev. James Krische | NYC

AOA NEWS
By Tahlib
FATHER JAMES KRISHCHE, formerly of St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church in New York City is a Believer For Artists. Under his leadership (2009 - 2011), the church opened the doors of its closed parish school to create a haven for space-starved artists in Brooklyn, NYC. While the exciting arts program ended when Fr. Krishche was reassigned in June 2011, all 36 classrooms had been claimed by painters, sculptors, a dressmaker and a choreographer with a waiting list of over 90.

According to The New York Times, the artists took real pleasure in their new chapter of the Roman Catholic Church’s long history of artistic patronage. It is however a relationship that has often been a complicated one but at St. Cecilia, Father Krische had remained hands off.  Celia Rowlson-Hall, a dancer, choreographer and filmmaker who occupied a cavernous studio on the school’s fifth floor explained, he "never said ‘This certain kind of work’ needs to happen.” Today St. Cecilia's is moving in a different direction but a legacy has been left by a visionary Believer.

The Alpha & Omega Project for Contemporary Religious Arts salutes JAMES KRISCHE "formerly" of Saint Cecilia Roman Catholic Church (NYC) and adds him in its 2011 honor roll of Believer's For Artists!

Dear Tahlib,

I would like to thank you for writing the blogspot about the art events that took place at St. Cecilia's while I was pastor there as well as the salute and for adding my name to the honor. My 3 years interacting with the arts community was a wonderful experience in so many ways. I met many good people as well. I regret that it wasn't able to continue but we did have a good run with as many as 10 groups a week using the property with their crews or artists and guests in addition to the 36 art studio classrooms. I am now doing my other ministry as an Army chaplain and so I send you greetings from Afghanistan. Thanks again for the honor and blessings on your evangelization ministry.
