"Outcast" (2011) by Peter Howson
NEW YORK - Scottish painter Peter Howson is currently exhibiting, recent paintings, and older drawings at the Flowers Gallery through May 5th, 2012. The exhibition entitled, "Redemption" is as deeply disturbing as it is masterfully executed. Howson deals passionately with spiritual themes, and deserves his international reputation as one of his generation’s leading figurative painters. In the four-foot tall painting "Outcast" (above) Howson has used impastos to render a tranquil, but suffering Christ, surrounded by a group of pariahs still clawing at him for undeserved blessings. 529 West 20th St and phone number: 212 439 1700.

Howson's work is filled with such turmoil that it is hard to imagine a place where it belongs outside of a church, museum or gallery. Would you want to live with it? Roualts work tackles the same subjects but in a way that invites you into the journey to redemption. Howson's vision makes you want to run away and cower. Both are right on point but it's hard to imagine living with Howson's recent works.
I could live with it! It's insanely on point. Definitely not for the Thomas Kinkade crowd but it definitely works for me!
