Movie Review: "The Dark Knight Rises" Brings Trilogy to a Satisfying Close (3 Stars)

The chief question to be answered regarding “The Dark Knight Rises,” Christopher Nolan’s deliriously anticipated third and final installation of his Batman films, isn’t “Is it any good?” or even, as has been bandied about since it went into production, “Is it a Best Picture contender?” Most important, does “The Dark Knight Rises” achieve the impossible, which is to bring a cherished cinematic chapter to a close, yet manage to leave fans feeling not desolate but cheered? To that all-important question, the answer is an unequivocal yes. [link]

I really enjoyed this movie, and the trilogy as a whole, but I was suprised by how it was able to avoid religious connections when they appeared ever present. Spiritual themes of Christian resurrection, Islamic sacrifice, Jewish redemption and Buddhist allusions to changing realities are all there but avoided, and I think making those connections would have made an even stronger movie but given that it's a box-office hit without them, I give this a thumbs up for "BEST PICTURE" of the year...already.
The mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater on Friday dented ticket sales for “The Dark Knight Rises,” but not by much. The film, which is the culmination of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, took in about $162 million in North America over the weekend. Hollywood was publicly silent about box-office results on Sunday; studios, citing respect for the 12 people killed on Friday at a midnight viewing of “The Dark Knight Rises,” declined to report totals.
