Such portraits hung in the halls of monasteries. This one is from the 18th or 19th century.

TENNESSEE---An exhibit open[ed] Sept. 15 at the University of Tennessee's Frank H. McClung Museum explores both the simple yet elegant beauty and the deeper meanings of art developed around Zen Buddhism.
