RELIGIOUS ART | NEWS OF WEEK

ALPHA OMEGA ARTS
By TAHLIB
The Buddha taught that inspiration comes in groups. "The virtues, like the Muses, are always seen in groups. A good principle was never found solitary in any breast," said Buddha. This week, the world's attention focuses on the grouping of over 1,500 artworks from 47 countries. For 19 days in Grand Rapids, Michigan, over 400,000 visitors will descend on this city and vote for their favorite artworks in churches, galleries, museums, banks, bike shops, and even the riverfront. It's not a permanent collection but it is a group moment, and that makes "Tall Buddha" (above) by Philip Lynch at ArtPrize my NEWS OF WEEK.

It's more than Art. It's Religion. We are believers (and skeptics too), united in the search for human meaning through art from the religious imagination. We believe in the artists and craftsman who dare to explore religious themes through their creativity. When you believe, you join other believers. Some of us join the Alpha & Omega Project for Contemporary Religious Arts as dues-paying members; others support the A&O Prize - Youth Scholarships as donors; most subscribe to this "free" weekly newsletter (or follow on: TumblrTwitter, Facebook or Soundcloud). All are welcome. Join us.

I can not believe how much fun I had at this event. The 3 days I was there went by so fast. Roaming the city visiting stores, galleries and restaurants to view and vote on art. Also just experiencing Grand Rapids, MI. Fabulous event and city!
This is truly a departure from the traditional way of seeing, in this case, Ganesha. I think that much of traditional religious art has a very abstracted and therefore removed quality. Using photographs as a basis is sure to evoke more comment and thought.
